Gary Bettman's league could be heading somewhere nobody expected, and Bill Daly is now at the center of it.

New Orleans.
Yes, seriously.
That's the city suddenly gaining traction in NHL expansion talks. And it's not just noise.
According to Frank Seravalli, Daly confirmed there's real interest from a group in Louisiana.
Frank Seravalli: NHL expansion: The conversation I was having with Deputy Commissioner Daly...he goes yeah, I talked to the Governor of Louisiana; he's like no seriously, there's a group in New Orleans that's really interested in...the NHL - Big Show (3/27)

Ownership interest.
Political backing. Even conversations with the state level. That's how this starts.
Quietly.
Then it builds.

An unexpected market gaining momentum

New Orleans isn't a traditional hockey market.
That's obvious.
But expansion isn't only about history anymore. It's about ownership strength.
Arena plans.
Market potential. And willingness to spend.
That's where this gets interesting. Because once a serious group steps forward, the league listens. Even if the location feels unconventional.
We've seen it before.
Vegas worked.
Seattle worked.
Both were questioned early.
Both delivered.
Now, New Orleans is trying to enter that conversation. And timing matters here. The NHL has been cautious with expansion lately.
But the appetite is still there.
Especially if the financial side makes sense. That's always the driver. Right now, nothing is imminent.
No formal process.
No official bid announced.
But the tone is shifting. From “random idea” to “serious interest.” And when Daly acknowledges it publicly, it carries weight.
Because those conversations don't happen by accident. They happen when there's something real behind them. The question now isn't if the NHL is aware.
It clearly is.
The question is whether New Orleans can turn interest into a full push. Because once that happens, things move fast. And suddenly, a new market isn't just a rumor anymore.
It's a possibility.
