Toronto Maple Leafs forward Scott Laughton is set to become a free agent this summer, and after a rough season in 2024-25, his future is up in the air.

Scott Laughton was not great during the second half of last season as he made his debut with the Toronto Maple Leafs following a trade from the Philadelphia Flyers.
In 20 games, Laughton had just four points, and there were times when it felt like he should be taken out of the lineup completely.
He was supposed to be the team's third-line center, although in the end, he got demoted to the fourth line, where he will start this upcoming season.

Scott Laughton talks 2026 free agency

This season, the Maple Leafs organization is expecting more out of Laughton, especially as the 31-year-old is set to become a free agent during the Summer of 2026.
Recently, Laughton appeared on 'Leafs Morning Take,' where he was asked about free agency and whether or not he wants to stay with the Leafs going forward.
Yeah, for sure. I think that's something I haven't thought too much into. I think I have to focus on helping this team and hopefully those conversations come.
While Laughton is interested in staying in Toronto, the team has not engaged with him on contract extension talks. It seems like they are taking a wait-and-see approach.
Given Laughton's struggles last season, it makes sense that the team would be wary about giving the forward a deal right now. It just wouldn't make much sense from a hockey or financial point of view.
If Laughton can get himself back to where he needs to be, while proving to be a solid bottom-six contributor, then there is no denying that the Leafs will look to extend him.
One just has to look at Steven Lorentz to understand how the Leafs operate in these situations.
