The Maple Leafs strengthen their blue-line depth by signing Hayes Hundley

Hayes Hundley is in Toronto's orbit now, and Craig Berube just got one more blue-line name to watch for the next wave.
The Maple Leafs announced Hundley has signed a three-year entry-level contract that begins in 2026-27. He'll finish 2025-26 with the Toronto Marlies on an amateur tryout.
That makes this more than a future flyer. Toronto gets Hundley into its system right away, gets him around the Marlies staff, and starts the clock on evaluating where he fits in the organization.
It also lands at a time when the Leafs need more than just good headlines. In the standings shown, Toronto sits 14th in the East at 31-29-13 with 75 points.
That's the part that matters here. When a club is carrying a -26 goal differential this late in the year, every blue-line addition gets viewed through the same lens: can this player help steady the pipeline?
Berube's immediate lineup probably doesn't change because of an amateur tryout with the Marlies. But the organization clearly wants Hundley in the building now instead of waiting until training camp.
And that's usually the tell. A team doesn't fast-track that process unless it wants a longer look at habits, pace, and how a defenceman handles pro hockey day to day.
Why Toronto made the move now
Toronto's recent form in the standings image is 4-4-2 over its last 10 games. That's not a club operating with much margin, so adding to the depth chart on defense makes sense.
This move is also about control. The Leafs now get a few weeks to see Hundley around the Marlies room, on the ice, and in a pro schedule before his entry-level deal officially kicks in.
For a front office, that matters. It gives Toronto a cleaner read on whether Hundley projects as a longer-term recall option, an AHL regular, or a player who needs a slower runway.
The contract start date matters too. Because it begins in 2026-27, the Leafs can bring him into the Marlies environment now without forcing a rushed NHL decision next week.
There's pressure on every move around this team because of where Toronto sits in the race. That's why a prospect signing like this doesn't land as filler news. It lands as a development story.
Hundley still has to show he can handle the pro pace and earn trust inside the organization. But the Leafs have made one thing clear: they wanted him in their system right away, and Berube's club needs more options on the blue line than it has today.
