Toronto Maple Leafs come to a sad realization about Max Domi

Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving has reportedly been shopping Max Domi, although it appears as though this might not be the right move.
Max Domi has had his fair share of struggles this season. However, he has been kicking things up a notch as of late, especially after a three-point performance against the Ottawa Senators.
He now has 17 points in 36 games, which is a much better pace than last season, when he had just eight goals and 33 points throughout the entire campaign.
With Domi struggling to find his footing in the lineup, he has oftentimes been named as a potential trade chip for the Leafs, who need to offload some salaries and get some assets.
However, as Jonas Siegel of The Athletic explains, trading Domi might not be the move, as there are some factors getting in the way of such a thing.
Max Domi cannot be traded
Simply put, Domi makes too much money. With a salary of $3.75 million, it has become clear that the forward is untradeable.
Not only would teams be reluctant to trade for him, if they did accept a deal, they would give the Leafs nothing in return. As a result, the Leafs are better off keeping him around.
But what is there to sell, really, that makes giving up worthwhile?
Max Domi, for instance, has two more years left on his contract at a cap hit of $3.75 million.
Even if they could trade him, which seems unlikely, he's not bringing back anything of value in return (unless it's an equally bad contract).

It's a sad reality, albeit one that general manager Brad Treliving needs to accept from here on out. Besides, if Domi is on the uptick, then perhaps keeping him is a blessing in disguise.
There are lots of difficult decisions that need to be made right now, and Treliving is not in an enviable position.
