Toronto Maple Leafs Depth Defenseman Makes Strong Statement Ahead of Training Camp

The Toronto Maple Leafs acquired Matt Benning in the Timothy Liljegren trade, and while he hasn't played a game for the team, he is certainly motivated.
Matt Benning was a player who was relegated to the AHL and the Toronto Maple Leafs last season, mostly because the Maple Leafs are so stacked on defense.
There simply was not a spot for him on the roster, and as a result, he was a bit of an afterthought, even when there were injuries on the Leafs roster.
He was acquired in the Timothy Liljegren trade, and at the time, the expectations for Benning were low. In fact, it was always felt like he was brought in for the Toronto Marlies.

Having said that, Benning is more motivated than ever before to make the Maple Leafs roster, and show that he means business.
While speaking to the Edmonton Journal, he made it crystal clear that he believes he is an NHL player who deserves a spot on a roster.
I still think I'm an NHL defenceman. I didn't get a chance for a call-up (with the Leafs) but their D core is really good. I don't blame them. I need a good camp to either impress them or another team (waiver claim) before the season starts.
Unfortunately, for Benning, making the Maple Leafs is not going to be easy this season, and the odds are stacked against him.
For now, he will likely be used as a top call-up if the Maple Leafs suffer injuries. He likely won't even be the seventh defenseman.
While it is unfortunate, that is just how things go. If he really wants to play, he might have to demand a trade.
