Toronto Maple Leafs Make Baffling First Pick of the NHL Entry Draft

Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving and Director of Amateur Scouting Mark Leach have made a surprising pick in the NHL Entry Draft.
The Toronto Maple Leafs had to wait until the end of the second round of the NHL Entry Draft before they could finally make a pick.
Moments ago, the Leafs used the 64th overall pick in the draft to select 6'4" center Tinus Luc-Koblar from the Swedish Junior League, where he plays for Leksands IF Jr.
Koblar becomes the first ever draft pick from the Director of Amateur Scouting, Mark Leach. For many, this is a bit of a head-scratcher, especially when you consider how there is limited information on this kid.
Below, you can see some of his highlights. Last season, he scored eight goals, recorded 13 assists, and totaled 21 points in 43 games. Needless to say, he is not lighting the lamp.
However, when you get to the second round, the pickings are usually pretty slim, and there is no guarantee that these guys are NHLers anyway.
However, at 6'4", Koblar would add quite a bit of size to the center position, and at 17 years old, he has lots of development to go before ever joining the Leafs' roster.

Mark Leach and Brad Treliving understand that the guys they are drafting on Day 2 won't be as good as the rest of the field.
Although, as Leach previously stated, they do, indeed, have a strategy.
You take the best available player talent-wise at that pick. When you get down to No. 64, these players take a little longer to develop... You just be patient with them.... These kids, most of them, are three to five years away.
Fans will just have to wait and see if these picks actually pan out, and if the Leafs can develop these guys into future NHLers.
