Toronto Maple Leafs defensive prospect Victor Johansson was looking to start for Team Sweden at the World Juniors, but in the end, he got last-minute bad news.
Swedish defenseman Victor Johansson was the fourth-round pick of the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2024, and he has proven to be an interesting prospect.
Throughout the last few seasons, Johansson has continued to be a solid young defenseman in the Swedish leagues. As a left-handed defenseman, he has shown some offensive prowess, which could take him a long way.
In fact, Johansson was given the opportunity of a lifetime recently when it was revealed that he would be part of Team Sweden's World Juniors efforts.
On Friday, the team made its tournament debut against Team Slovakia and ended up winning in an incredibly tight game that almost became an upset.
Victor Johansson scratched against Team Slovakia
Unfortunately, for Johansson, he was a healthy scratch in the game, and will have to wait before making his U-20 Team Sweden debut.
Instead, the team went with Leo Sahlin-Wallenius, Felix Carell, Felix Ohrqvist, Sascha Boumedienne, William Hakansson, Alfons Freij, and Viggo Gustafsson.
A healthy scratch is never easy for a young player, especially when it happens in a big tournament that could lead to huge opportunities.
The Maple Leafs currently have another defensive prospect at the World Juniors, Ben Danford. Danford is a stud and seems to be on the right track right now.
Team Canada won its first game against Czechia by a score of 7-5, and we can just imagine what a game between Canada and Sweden will look like.
Hopefully, Johansson can get himself into a game sooner rather than later. It would be a great moment for the kid, and it could give the Leafs a closer look at his talent.
