Toronto Maple Leafs Reportedly Preparing to Claim Boston Bruins Goaltender Off Waivers

With Joseph Woll on a leave of absence and James Reimer leaving a lot to be desired, it has been said that the Toronto Maple Leafs are in the market for a backup goalie.

Whenever a netminder is placed on waivers, there are analysts who pop up to say that the Maple Leafs should claim them.

Well, that happened again on Sunday as the Boston Bruins placed former Vancouver Cancucks draft pick Michael DiPietro on waivers.

The Bruins hope for DiPietro to clear so that he can go down to Providence. However, according to one NHL reporter, the Maple Leafs might look to sabotage that.

According to James Murphy, the Maple Leafs and the Calgary Flames are two teams that have been consistently interested in DiPietro. The Carolina Hurricanes are interested as well.

If an NHL backup goalie is what the Maple Leafs want, then DiPietro probably isn't a very good choice, all things considered.

He only has three NHL games on his record, and each game was a bit of a disaster as his goals-against average is well over 5.00. However, goalies peak late, and at 26, perhaps he is better than he used to be.

Either way, the Leafs have big decisions to make this week, especially as it pertains to their goaltending. Whether or not they sign James Reimer remains to be seen.

On Wednesday night, the Maple Leafs will play the Montreal Canadiens in their first game of the NHL regular season.
