Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews is under scrutiny for his health following last season, and with the season about to start, some are wondering if he is fully recovered.
Auston Matthews was dealing with a nagging injury last season, and it led to much concern among fans about whether or not he needed surgery.
In the end, the forward opted not to get surgery. Still, to this day, no one actually knows the nature of the injury and what part of his body it impacted.
This lack of transparency has been especially concerning, even though Matthews has claimed that he will be just fine to start this upcoming season.
Auston Matthews' health in questions
A new report from Luke Fox, however, showcases just how bad things were for Matthews last season.
In his reporting, it was revealed that the Maple Leafs captain played at one-third of his potential last season. This could explain why he only had 33 goals instead of 69.
According to Luke Fox, Matthews was operating at just 34% in 2024-25. How did anyone think it was smart to let him play out the year and go to 4 Nations in that state? God, I'm hoping we get a healthy AM34 this season.
Overall, this is going to be a difficult season for Matthews, who will be without Mitch Marner for the first time in his career.
Matthew Knies will be to his left, but the right wing seems to be anyone's game. Max Domi could prove to be the guy, but Matias Maccelli is also an option.
Whatever the case may be, there will be lots of speculation surrounding Matthews if he has yet another disappointing season with the team.
Hopefully, this season goes off without a hitch, and Matthews truly is back to 100 percent, as fans have been expecting.
