The Vancouver Canucks clearly want to keep Rick Tocchet long-term, and now, it's been revealed that he's already shut down an official offer from the team.
This speculation comes amidst a tough season for the Vancouver Canucks, and for the team to retain Tocchet beyond this season, they're reportedly going to have to sell him on this team being something he wants to coach.
Now, Elliotte Friedman has unveiled the latest on this situation, revealing that the team have already made him an offer beyond 2024/25, but he has reportedly shut that down and denied it.
«I think they have made Tocchet an offer. And obviously, that offer didn't get it done. I don't know how soon he's going to want to talk about it, but eventually, it's going to get to a point where they all have to decide when do they want to sit down and talk about this."
Tocchet is nowhere near the highest paid coach in the NHL (Mike Sullivan is with a $5.5 million per year contract), and according to Friedman's report, they're going to need to up his salary in a big way to keep him.
«It comes down to - do you get a new deal, or not? Some of that is going to be term and finances. If they want to extend Tocchet, it's going to go into a bigger number than they've paid a coach in quite some time."
Not only that, but they'll reportedly need to pay him more than they've paid any coach in quite some time, and when Tocchet was asked about his situation, he revealed that it will be some time until they can sit down and have a proper discussion.
«I think it's better to wait for me [to wait] so we can really sit down and talk because I have no time to talk about my contract, in the sense that, you know, what I want to do in some step because I'm all in with this team right now."
Ultimately, it's 50/50 on whether or not Tocchet will be behind the Canucks bench next season, and if it does happen, Vancouver's front office will need to pony up plenty of cash to make it happen.
