Washington Capitals center Nicklas Backstrom has joined the Capitals in anticipation of Alex Ovechkin's big moment, as they anticipate him breaking Wayne Gretzky's record.
Alex Ovechkin is without a doubt the greatest goal-scorer in the history of the NHL and now it is only a matter of time before he holds the record for most goals in a career.
With another goal last night, he came within six of tying Gretzky at 894 and seven of taking the number one spot for himself.
The goal was also his 35th of the season, giving him 15 seasons where he has hit that mark, the most any player has ever acheived.
With 13 games left in the regular season, it seems quite likely that Ovi will break the record this year.
As such, fans and analysts alike are starting to keep a closer eye on the great one as you never know how many goals he might pot on a given night.
His teammates have also taken notice of this, including one of his long-time buddies.
Capitals center Nicklas Backstrom, who is effectively retired now, has rejoined the team to travel with them in anticipation of Ovechkin's historic moment, showing how much he cares about him.
Backstrom last played last season when he got into just 8 games and put up a single assist.
He remains under contract with the team for the rest of the season, but will not play in any more games due to a career-ending hip injury.
Before he got hurt Backstrom got into over 1100 career games, all with the Capitals, and all during Ovechkin's career.
