As a family physician in Richmond, B.C., Dr. Harjas Grewal is a keen hockey observer whose analysis of National Hockey League injuries provides color over Twitter commentary.
It appears his initial assessment of the injury that Alex Ovechkin suffered was correct, as it has just been announced by the team that their leading scorer will be out week-to-week.
Dr. Grewal initially said the video of Alex Ovechkin leaving Monday's 6-2 win over Utah after a knee-on-knee hit from Jack McBain "looked pretty bleak.". It is an injury that could dent his hope of beating Wayne Gretzky's all-time goal-scoring record. Going into the injury, Ovechkin had seemed on course to pass Gretzky's 894-goal mark in the NHL before the close of the season.
However, if this estimation of his injury timeline is to hold any truth, Ovechkin's endeavor to become the league's all-time leading goal scorer may have hit a sizeable bump.
Ovechkin, who had a hat trick against the Vegas Golden Knights on Sunday, had scored twice against Utah before leaving the game in the third period after colliding with McBain on a brutal play.
Having scored 868 career goals, the 39-year-old is now only 27 goals away from surpassing Gretzky's record, which will likely take a lot longer than initially thought.
