While he cautions it's still a developing story, it appears major changes are on the way for the NHL draft in 2024.
Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman has revealed the results of a vote by NHL teams on whether to decentralize the NHL draft, and it's a big yes.
"This is still developing, but, according to several sources, the vast majority of NHL teams voted to decentralize the draft.
Ballots were due Tuesday, and there clearly is desire to try a new format. Discussions on how to move forward will be at the GM meetings in November and Board of Governors in December." - 32 Thoughts So what exactly does that mean? It means the NHL draft will be more like those in other major leagues, where team executives stay at home to continue working on things like free agency and trades, while the draftees would gather at a specific location. Owners seem to be big on the change as it allows their high paid executives to concentrate on other things, while also drastically lowering costs.
That all said, there has always been something special about seeing a young player walk up to the stage and shake the hand of a team's general manager and/or owner. How this whole thing plays out remains to be seen, but expect major changes next year.
