Auston Matthews injures Maple Leafs newest acquisition Ryan O'Reilly
When Kyle Dubas made the trade for Ryan O'Reilly most fans were elated. Some fans however had immediate flashbacks to the acquisition of Nick Foligno. Some Leafs fans feared that the veteran O'Reilly, who suffered a broken foot earlier this year, could be damaged goods. However, those fears seemed to be quickly extinguished by his play.
Saturday night the Maple Leafs faced off against the Vancouver Canucks in a game the Canucks' Head Coach called "his team's playoffs". The Canucks would use that motivation to beat the Maple Leafs 4-1. But more concerning for the Leafs could be the health of Ryan O'Reilly.
Late in the 2nd period Auston Matthews throws a shot at net that hits O'Reilly directly in the hand. O'Reilly immediately shakes out his hand and heads right to the bench.
After the game Sheldon Keefe was unable to provide an update on ROR's injury, but it appears likely to be a broken hand or finger.
If O'Reilly misses significant time it likely won't make a difference to their playoff standing, but not having him against the Lightning would be a major loss.
Update: O'Reilly was spotted wearing a splint on his finger.
