A very tough break for one of the top prospects in the Edmonton Oilers system. Beau Akey will be undergoing season ending surgery.
Akey has already signed his entry-level contract with the Oilers, but was sent back to the Barrie Colts of the OHL after training camp to continue his development. Unfortunately, he'll now miss out on pretty much an entire season of honing his skills.
"Edmonton Oilers defence prospect Beau Akey will be having season ending shoulder surgery soon. He'll find out when next week. A blow for the OHL's Barrie Colts but he'll be ready for next season."
According to one report, the surgery on his shoulder is due to a recent dislocation.
"I'm told defenceman Beau Akey, selected 56th overall by the
@EdmontonOilers in the 2023 Entry Draft and playing with the Barrie Colts, is done for the balance of this season after having surgery to repair a dislocated shoulder."
Akey had played just 14 games on Barrie's blueline in 2023-24, and had already scored 4 goals and 9 points, and was a plus-4. Last season he managed 11 goals and 47 points in 66 games. However, his scouting report says the offense is just one of his skills, as he plays a solid, responsible defensive game. Hopefully, there are no setbacks and he heals quickly.
