Akey has already signed his entry-level contract with the Oilers, but was sent back to the Barrie Colts of the OHL after training camp to continue his development. Unfortunately, he'll now miss out on pretty much an entire season of honing his skills.
According to one report, the surgery on his shoulder is due to a recent dislocation.
Akey had played just 14 games on Barrie's blueline in 2023-24, and had already scored 4 goals and 9 points, and was a plus-4. Last season he managed 11 goals and 47 points in 66 games. However, his scouting report says the offense is just one of his skills, as he plays a solid, responsible defensive game. Hopefully, there are no setbacks and he heals quickly.
