A veteran of more than 400 NHL regular season and former member of the Boston Bruins games has suddenly decided to retire, hanging up the skates at 36
After 461 regular season NHL games, a 36-year-old veteran has suddenly decided to hang up his skates. Matt Irwin has announced his retirement through the NHLPA.
"As I reflect on my career, I can't help but feel incredibly grateful and fortunate to have lived out my childhood dream of playing in the NHL. My success would not have been possible without the support of my family, my in-laws and especially my wife, Chantel, and two kids Beckem and Lennon. You all pushed me to be the best version of myself on and off the ice."
Matt Irwin was never drafted. Instead, he made his way to the NHL through a contract with the AHL's Worcester Sharks. After two seasons and 73 points, the defenseman was signed to an NHL contract with the San Jose Sharks after injuries to Jason Demers and Brent Burns.
In 2015. Matt Irwin signed a one-year deal with the Boston Bruins, who recently got some tough injury news on fellow defenseman . He then went on to play for the Nashville Predators, Anaheim Ducks, Buffalo Sabres, and finally with the Washington Capitals, who recently picked up a veteran player from the Pittsburgh Penguins via a trade.
"There are so many people I would like to thank and it's really hard to express my gratitude the way that you all deserve, but please know that everyone that I crossed paths with during my career means the world to me and my family, and I thank you all from the bottom of my heart."
Congratulations to Matt Irwin on a great NHL career and all the best in whatever he decides to do next!
