550+ game NHL veteran announces surprising retirement at 33-years-old
The NHL is unquestionably a young man's game. With players breaking into the league sooner than ever, it often forces older players out of the league sooner. Today 552 game NHL veteran Michael Stone announced his retirement from the NHL.
Stone, 33, was injured last season in a game against the New York Rangers. He didn't return to the lineup for nearly 2 months. Stone played in only 2 games in April before the Flames season ended.
Stone was a unrestricted free agent, but it appears his heart was still in Calgary. It was also announced today that Stone has accepted a role to join the Flames front office.
In his career the defenseman played in 552 NHL games scoring 41 goals and adding 104 assists.
Good luck on retirement.
