Last week Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Jake Muzzin went to see a specialist in California to address his injury concerns. Muzzin has had a bad history of head and neck issues throughout the last few years of his career. NHL insider Chris Johnston reports that there is concern over his health. Even if Muzzin returns, will his body be able to withstand playing consistently in the NHL? Right now there is no time table for Muzzin's return and it sounds like his playing career could be in serious jeopardy.
This is tough news to hear for Muzzin and for the Maple Leafs. You have to hope that Muzzin can return to full health whether he plays hockey again or not. So let's hope for a speedy recovery for him. Muzzin's play has become an asset for the Maple Leafs. He is a good stay at home defenseman that has anchored the Toronto blueline effectively for years. Replacing his presence on the ice and in the locker room will not be easy. Muzzin also has championship experience winning Stanley Cups with Los Angeles. If he misses an extended period of time or if he is force to retire, Toronto will surely miss him.
The only thing that benefits the Maple Leafs in this situation is that they can place Muzzin on long-term injured reserve which would open up some cap space for them. As a result, they could pursue another player for their roster. In the end, let's hope Muzzin can make a full recovery and return to the Toronto blueline. In four games played this season, Jake Muzzin has one assist.
