The case against former NHLer, Jake Virtanen had been sent to the jury for deliberation yesterday. The jury was unable to reach a verdict after day 1 of deliberation, but this morning they have reached a decision.
Virtanen had been accused of sexual assault on a young woman in his hotel room in the Vancouver area. Throughout the entire case the defense had maintained that this was a consensual encounter that the victim was trying to exploit. After several days if witness testimony it appears the jury as sided with Virtanen's defense.
Upon the release of these allegations the Vancouver Canucks elected to buyout the wingers contract. The Canucks claimed they simply "needed the cap space" but it was clear to everyone why they were terminating the deal. It will be interesting to see if Virtanen gets another chance in the NHL or in North America.
