In a wave of action that seems to be rare in the NHL, moments ago NHL insider Chris Johnston reported that several teams will be buying out massive contracts. Matt Duchene in Nashville, Mike Reilly in Boston, Blake Wheeler in Winnipeg, and Kailer Yamamoto in Detroit are the buyout casualties.
It's a list of players being paid too much in comparison to the value they provide at this point in their careers, but the names on this list could prove interesting in free agency. As Winnipeg and Nashville move towards retooling their rosters, other teams may have interest in their former stars at a lower cap hit.
With today being the final day for teams to complete compliance buyouts this summer, this flurry of action was expected. Now, we'll see teams react to these contract decisions and more heading into free agency tomorrow.
