Breaking News - Toronto Maple Leafs lose John Tavares for extended time due to injury
The Toronto Maple Leafs began training camp with high hopes for this season. Upon arrival John Tavares appeared to be in the best shape of his career. After having to overcome horrific injury suffered the year before, Tavares was finally able to put in a full summer of work to get into shape.
That good news didn't last long for the Maple Leafs as today Tavares was absent from Maple Leafs practice. His absence was noted by multiple members of the media and it didn't take the Leafs long to confirm they'd be without their captain for at least 3 weeks.
Luke Fox of Sportsnet provided the following information:
Oblique strain will sideline John Tavares for a minimum of three weeks.
The injury likely opens up a spot on the opening day rosters for one of the Maple Leafs young rookies trying to make the roster. This injury could force the Leafs to give a player like Nick Robertson an extended look.
This summer the Leafs brought in Calle Jarnkrok who can play center, this injury could see him shift to center on the second line or the return of Alex Kerfoot to center.
This isn't Tavare's first oblique injury and could see him miss an extended time.
