Carolina Hurricanes announce signing of 500 game NHL veteran

Defenseman Calvin de Haan is returning to the Carolina Hurricanes after signing a one-year contract with them this weekend. The former first round pick was invited to Carolina as part of a professional tryout contract and showed enough for the Hurricanes to make him a one year offer worth $850,000.

Calvin de Haan spent the last three season skating for the Chicago Blackhawks organization. The steady defender is already familiar with the Carolina Hurricanes franchise. He spent the 2018-2019 season with them. This will be de Hann's eleventh NHL season and he has proved himself as a reliable defensive defenseman.

This is an inexpensive and shrewd move by general manager Don Waddell. This gives the Hurricanes another defenseman with NHL experience into their line up and it is at an affordable price. Mostly likely, de Hann will be Carolina's fifth or sixth defenseman. A role that suits de Haan well. As the season is about to get underway shortly, NHL clubs are continuing to adjust their lineups and add depth where they can. This weekend's move by Carolina insures that have one the league's top defense core.
