At the 2021 NHL Entry Draft, Stan Bowman was still General Manager of the Chicago Blackhawks. Unfortunately for Bowman, he received a call from Jarmo Kekalainen. Jarmo has developed quite the reputation around the league as a master negotiator. Unfortunately for Bowman he was fleeced by Jarmo and it likely contributed to him losing his job.

The history of Columbus winning trades begins with Brandon Saad and Artemi Panarin, but this is just another story, for another time in asset mismanagement.

Let's take a look at the last fleecing of Chicago for posterity:

BLACKHAWKS RECEIVE
SETH JONES
2021 1ST ROUND PICK (#32 - NOLAN ALLEN)
2022 6TH ROUND PICK

BLUE JACKETS RECEIVE
ADAM BOQVIST
2021 1ST ROUND PICK (#12 COLE SILLINGER)
2021 2ND ROUND PICK (#44 ALEKSI HEIMOSALMI)
2022 1ST ROUND PICK (6TH OVERALL)

The 2022 1st round pick, ended up being David Jiricek, a solid defensive prospect with huge upside and we all know how well Cole Sillinger and Adam Boqvist have been in their first year with the club.

Since then Scott Bowman gave Seth Jones a max extension and a massive overpay of a contract. A massive win for Jones and his agent, as his play had been on a downturn after 2019-2020, despite being on a successful(more than usual) under Tortorella-coached team from 2015-2021.

The contract is an issue for the team now, as they're having a fire sale on talent but apparently, the price tag is too high, according to reports by The Athletic's Scott Power, in a recent mailbag.

Seth Jones signed a 8 year / $76,000,000 contract with the Chicago Blackhawks, including a $40,250,000 signing bonus, $76,000,000 guaranteed, and an annual average salary of $9,500,000. In 2022-23, Jones will earn a base salary of $750,000 and a signing bonus of $9,250,000, while carrying a cap hit of $9,500,000.

It looks like in order to move Jones, Kyle Davidson may have to look to package him with a prospect, or retaining salary.

It was even reported at the NHL Draft that the Blackhawks offered Jones to the Ottawa Senators for virtually zero return and Pierre Dorion who is desperate to add a defenseman, declined.
