Well, that escalated quickly. A reporter covering the Edmonton Oilers and a former NHL referee have had it out online after criticism over a question asked of Connor McDavid.

Following another Oilers loss last night where the team gave up five goals, Mark Spector of Sportsnet asked McDavid if he would rather win games 4-1 or 7-5. The first part of McDavid's answer summed up his feelings about the question.

"You love this question, but I've answered it so many times. We're trying to keep the puck out of our net, obviously."

Fans online started piling on Spector for the question, including former NHL referee Tim Peel. Spector decided to send some direct messages to Peel, which Peel promptly shared on his social media.

"This is what happens when you call out an Edmonton reporter for asking Connor McDavid if he'd rather win 4-1. An idiotic question, of course they would. This is why some players don't want to play in Canada. Connor played his ass off tonight!"

While calling the question into question is valid, Peel seems to want to be involved in every controversial hockey topic since his "retirement" from the NHL. While no one is calling Spector's question a good one, there are plenty questioning Peel's method of calling him out, too.
