Edmonton Oilers forced to play 3.2 million dollar bonus to player with 0 points

When the Oilers signed Connor Brown this offseason, they took a risk betting on a player who missed almost all of last season with injury. A slow start for Brown could've been expected as he got back up to speed, and yet the team gave him a bonus in the contract with pays him $3.225M if he played ten games with the team.

After playing his first nine games and recording zero points, Brown was sidelined with an injury for six games, and many thought his tenure with the team would be over with his bonus looming.

However, today Brown laced up for his tenth game of the season, earning his bonus and sticking the Oilers with a $3.225M cap penalty for next year.

Having zero points in his first ten games and a -5 rating, it's a seriously questionable decision for the Oilers to play Brown instead of exploring any other avenue to avoid paying the bonus.
