Edmonton Oilers goaltender fails physical expected to go on long-term injured reserve
The Edmonton Oilers spent this summer looking to completely restructure their goaltending situation. After Mikko Koskinen decided to sign in Europe and news leaked earlier this summer that Mike Smith was expected to miss the entire season due to injury. Today that information was confirmed by the Edmonton Oilers.
As is the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement Smith was forced to report to Edmonton as part of training camp for medicals. Today Ken Holland announced that Smith failed that medical as expected.
Ken Holland said that Mike Smith failed his physical and returned to Kelowna, B.C. He'll be LTIR bound.
The result of Smith doesn't shock the Oilers who signed Jack Campbell as a replacement earlier this year. This will likely mark the end of Smith's NHL career as he has one year remaining on his contract. Choosing not to retire will ensure is paid for the season before he calls it a career.
