Edmonton Oilers make major statement about their confidence in Jack Campbell
The NHL is very much a "what have you done for me lately" type league. That is especially true for goaltenders. When the Oilers signed Jack Campbell this summer to a 5 year $25,000,000 contract they thought they'd found their number 1 goalie.
Unfortunately for the Oilers they didn't get the version of Jack Campbell who appeared to be a Vezina Candidate last November. Instead receiving the Jack Campbell who couldn't stop a puck for the second half of last season. Now the Oilers are tied to the Campbell contract and aren't sure what they're going to do with him.
Tonight the Oilers face off against one of the NHL's best teams in the New Jersey Devils. Many felt that would be Campbell's chance to get back into the net after sitting for 3 consecutive games. But Head Coach Jay Woodcroft has other ideas.
Woodcroft is clearly showing off that his confidence rests with the young Skinner. But you have to wonder, what is this doing to Campbell's psyche? Campbell is a goalie historically known for being mentally weak, so does watching the net slip away impact him heavily?
The Oilers better hope Campbell finds some consistency because if Skinner steals the net, he's also going to need a new deal for next season.
