The Toronto Maple Leafs and goaltender Matt Murray have been under fire in recent days, with Minnesota Wild head coach Dean Evason accusing him of cheating by intentionally knocking the net off 3 times in yesterdays win against Evason's Wild.
Former NHL goatender, Mike McKenna is having non of the cheating accusations, launching into a Twitter thread defending the two-time Stanley Cup Champion:
McKenna argues that there's no way Murray knocked the net off intentionally, instead pointing fingers at the Marsh pegs that were supposed to hold the net in place and the rink crew that didn't secure them properly.
Murray did not impact the post hard enough to knock it off under normal circumstances. His push with the arm doesn't matter. The Marsh Peg had been ejected prior. It failed because the peg was not fully inserted by the rink crew at the start of the period. Video confirms.
The net did seem to come off rather easy yesterday and had the pegs been installed correctly. If they had been, the fact the Murray used the posts wouldn't have mattered.
For it to happen 3 times is a little suspect, but I would be inclined to trust former NHL goaltender than I am armchair analysts on Twitter
