Former Olympian provides update on her condition after video of her injury surfaces
Last week, during a game in the top division of women's hockey in Sweden, HV71 captain Sanni Hakala suffered a terrible injury, one that will impact her for the rest of her life.
During the game, Hakala collided head-first with the goal post and was taken to hospital to undergo surgery.
As many were hoping for good news regarding Hakala's status, the 26-year-old shared in a post on Instagram that she will no longer be able to play hockey and will more then likely be spending the rest of her life in a wheelchair. Hakala is reportedly paralyzed from the chest down and has reduced function in her arms and hands.
"Not only that I now have to stop playing hockey, something that has been a large part of my life for many years, but that I may be forced to live the rest of my life in a wheelchair," Hakala said.
She added, "Now I need to put all my energy into rehabilitation so that I can recover as well as possible. Therefore, neither I nor HV71 will make any further comments regarding my injury or my status and I ask you all to show consideration and respect for me and my family."
Hakala has represented her nation, Finland, on many occasions throughout her career including four Women's World Championships, as well as the 2018 and 2022 Winter Olympics, winning bronze at both of those tournaments.
