Today, the Tempe City Council held the first of a series of meetings with the NHL to determine the future of the Arizona Coyotes. The Arizona Coyotes have proposed a new arena to the city of Tempe in a more urban area of Arizona, hoping to give the team a more viable economic future compared to their current home at Arizona State University with only 5,000 seats.
Along with it the team's proposed arena plans, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman was present to make assurances the Coyotes will have stability in the future, and to grow the game in Arizona.
If the city of Tempe is to accept the deal, it will be a long-term commitment to the Coyotes remaining in Arizona for the foreseeable future. Currently, sharing an arena with Arizona State University, the Coyotes do not have the financial strength to remain in the NHL, looking like a prime relocation candidate.
