New York Writer Arthur Staple wrote a piece in the Athletic on the topic of the New York Rangers offseason priorities. In the piece his sources said Defencemen Jacob Trouba was going to be named captain of the Rangers going into 2021-2022 season before someone above Coach Gerard Gallant nixed the plan. Sources speculate if that upper management call came from GM Chris Drury.

Trouba would have been a bit of a surprising choice. He would have only played for the Rangers for two seasons going into 2021-2022 with one of those getting shortened because of Covid. There are better players on the roster with more tenure like Chris Kreider and Mika Zibanejad.

The Rangers went with six Assistant Captains for the 2021-2022 season Barclay Goodrow, Chris Kreider, Artemi Panarin, Ryan Strome, Jacob Trouba and Mika Zibanejad.

Trouba is a solid defenceman who can put up points, and play over 20 minutes a night. He is hard to play against, using his 6'3 frame to make life difficult for the opposition. He likes to lay the body recording 207 hits this season. He was second on New York's blueline in ice time with an average of 22:25. Only Adam Fox played more with an average of 23:54.

In my opinion I think the Rangers should name a Captain next year and it should be Chris Kreider. He showed in these playoffs what all Rangers fans already know he loves his teammates and being a Ranger.
