Many people know the great teams the Colorado Avalanche put together years ago. The likes of Joe Sakic, Peter Forsberg, Milan Hejduk, Adam Foote, Rob Blake, Patrick Roy and so many more made the team extremely successful. But what many people don't know is that 25 years ago, Joe Sakic actually agreed to an offer sheet.
Sakic, who at that time was 28-years-old, received a 3-year contract worth $21,000,000 from the New York Rangers. Sakic agreed to the deal, which provided the Avalanche an opportunity to match. At the time the Rangers were looking to use their superior financial might, by using $15,000,000 in signing bonus money.
Air Force One went onto do $315,268,353 in worldwide box office revenue allowing the Avs to easily match this deal. Not to mention retaining Sakic allowed the Avs to eventually promote him into the General Manager role once he'd retired.
