Ottawa Senators' GM Pierre Dorion has done an impeccable job improving his roster this off-season with prized acquisitions of forwards Alex DeBrincat, Claude Giroux and goaltender Cam Talbot. As of now he hasn't been able to complete his summer wish list by adding a top-flight defenseman.
Dorion, himself expressed his desire on multiple occasions to add a top-four d-man, but ask any NHL GM and they will tell you, there aren't many dance partners willing to move such a player.
Chatter surrounding the Draft had the Senators interested in a pair of right-shot D, Penguins John Marino and Panthers Mackenzie Weegar, and of course Coyotes Jakob Chychrun. Marino and Weegar have since been dealt.
TSN 1200 Morning Host Shawn Simpson reported that their is a feeling that Chychrun will get moved before training camp. The Senators are in the mix with other clubs, but the ask is ridiculously high.
Chychrun's name, has been in trade rumors for some time now and the price to acquire remains high as it should. The 24-year-old is on a team friendly contract of $4,600,000 for the next three seasons. He had a bit of a down year this past season, he previously enjoyed an 18 goal, 41 point campaign in 56 games in 2020-21. He averaged 22:59 in ice time this past season while being a leader on the blueline.
The Senators' prospect cupboard is full, with names like Jake Sanderson, Ridley Greig, Mads Sogaard, and Lassi Thomson. Ottawa possess a first and second round pick in the next three drafts.
