Jason Spezza asks for privacy after suffering tragic loss
After spending years with the Toronto Maple Leafs organization this past summer Jason Spezza, made the decision to resign his post and join his friend Kyle Dubas with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Dubas and Spezza have developed a strong friendship and have worked closely together since the end of Jason's playing career.
Today Jason issued the following statement through the Pittsburgh Penguins X account.
On behalf of my family, it is with the heaviest of hearts that I share that my younger brother, Matthew, passed away due to an accidental overdose over the weekend. My family and I are heartbroken and ask for privacy during this difficult time.
Like older brother Jason, Matthew was an avid hockey player. Matthew who played goalie, spent time in the Ontario Hockey League as well as other professional leagues, but never reached the NHL level. At the time of his passing, Matthew was just 37 years old.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Spezza Family during this difficult time. If you or anyone you know are struggling with substance issues, please reach out for support.
