Las Vegas Golden Knights enigmatic goaltender Robin Lehner last played in the NHL during the 2021-22 season missing the entirety of last season dealing with lingering hip issues.
Vegas and Lehner have both been quiet on his absence. The last media release on him was at the beginning of the season announcing that he would begin the season LTIR.
The 32 year old is under contract until the end of the 2024-25 season with a cap hit of $5M.
Official status is out indefinitely.
Unofficially, it feels like VGK want his existence flushed off the face of the planet. That being said, Robin hasn't been willing to share his side of what's going on yet either so it's hard to say exactly what's going on.
In the past Vegas has been accused of cap circumvention, like during last year's playoffs when their captain Mark Stone was conveniently activated from injured reserve ahead of their first game of the Stanley Cup playoffs after not playing since January 31st because of back problems. Stone would score 11 goals and 24 points in 22 games on the franchises run to their first ever Stanley Cup.
This situation however feels different. Since he's last played Lehner has experienced a multitude of legal troubles, some the Golden Knights would like to separate themselves from. However, none of them are severe enough for the Knights to be able to terminate his contract.
It is clear though, the Knights don't want Lehner anywhere near the team and in a perfect world, they'd love to see him wiped from team history as well.
