NHL announces location for next year's Heritage Classic outdoor game
The NHL tries to hold a minimum of two of two speciality outdoor games per year. That includes both the Winter Classic and Heritage Classic. It appears the NHL has settled on a final landing spot for this year's Heritage Classic.
The Battle of Alberta with the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames will be featured in 2023's Heritage Classic, giving us another round of the classic rivalry.
It's great that the NHL saw fit to give us another game of this caliber, after only scheduling the teams to play each other 3 times this year.
The Battle of Alberta dominated last year's Western Conference Finals and delivered a highly competitive, high-event hockey series. This should be no different.
Common Wealth stadium hosted the first Heritage Classic back in 2003 with the Edmonton Oilers taking on the Montreal Canadiens, which the Oilers defeats the Canadiens 4-3.
The 2023 Heritage Classic will mark the third time the Oilers will participate in an outdoor game the club having played in that inaugural Heritage Classic and the 2016 game in Winnipeg and also the third for the Flames, who similarly hosted a Heritage Classic, in 2011, and took on Winnipeg in 2019.
