New Jersey Devils send former 20 goal scorer to the minors
The New Jersey Devils have made some recent roster moves. First off, they have activated their captain Nico Hischier off of injured reserve. That is great news for Hischier and New Jersey to have him healthy and in the lineup early in the year. In order to make room for him on the roster, New Jersey has sent forward Andreas Johnsson to the Utica Comets in the American Hockey League.
At one time, it seemed like the future was bright for Johnsson. He won playoff most valuable player in the American League with the Toronto Marlies in 2018. The following season he scored twenty goals for the Toronto Maple Leafs. After being traded to New Jersey, Johnsson has struggled to find consistency in his game. As a result, he's been sent to Utica. Another telling sign of his struggles is that no other team put in a wavier claim for him.
There is a lot of good young draft picks in the Devils organization competing for roster spots and Johnsson is the odd man out. It is hard to determine where he Johnsson goes from here. Perhaps he can find his scoring touch and his confidence in the minors. It does seem likely that his days as a New Jersey Devil are over. Johnsson is a former seventh round pick of the Maple Leaks in 2013.
