Earlier today George Parros announced that Nicolas Aube-Kubel would receive a hearing for an illegal check to the head of Tampa Bay Lightning's Cal Foote. The hit occurred during the second period and would end the night for both players. After the hit a fight broke out between Patrick Maroon and Garnet Hathaway that would also result in supplemental discipline for both players.

Now Parros has rendered his decision and opted to issue the longest suspension of the season to Aube-Kubel. Saturday night Parros announced the following:

Washington's Nicolas Aube-Kubel has been suspended for three games for an Illegal Check to the Head on Tampa Bay's Cal Foote.

The NHL provided the following reasoning for the suspension.

Foote collects the pass in the neutral zone as Aube-Kubel comes back to defend the rush. Foote dumps the puck into the offensive zone after he does Aube-Kubel finishes a high, hard check that makes the head the main point of contact, on a hit where the contact was avoidable.

According to the league this hit satisfies both conditions of an illegal check to the head. The NHL provided these two reasons: The head is the main point of contact on the hit and if Aube-Kubel chose he could have avoided the hit.
