After the Columbus Blue Jackets announced earlier today that Patrik Laine was taking time off from the game of hockey, as well as entering the NHL/NHLPA Assistance Program, Laine himself has taken to social media to address why.
Laine broke into the league as the 2nd overall pick in 2016 with the Winnipeg Jets. His first four seasons showed potential for a superstar in the making, with him scoring 44 goals in his sophomore year. His pace has slowed since then. Laine played 17 games in 2023-24, netting 5 goals and 3 assists. His last game came against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Dec. 14, 2023, where he scored a goal. However, Laine suffered a fractured clavicle in the 6-5 overtime win for the Jackets, and hasn't played since.
