Pierre Dorion working on one final move to cap off his incredible off season
It hasn't taken long for Alex DeBrincat to draw the attention of fans and his new look Ottawa Senators team and it's still the preseason. DeBrincat has netted three goals in preseason, and he's shown good chemistry with Claude Giroux, particularly on the power-play. It looks like DeBrincat could have a huge goal total for himself this year. All this is working in his favor since he is a free agent at the end of the year, and he will be looking for a big raise.
There were earlier reports that DeBrincat was not willing to sign an extension right away but that he was «open» to the idea of it later down the road. That is an understandable response from Alex. Perhaps DeBrincat just had to get settled with his new club. Ottawa would clearly like to have Alex be a part of an already young and talented team for many years. Now that Alex has been apart of the organization for a few weeks and played well, rumors of a contract extension are starting again. NHL insider Kevin Weekes states that Ottawa and DeBrincat are talking about a possible contract extension. That is great news for both Ottawa and DeBrincat.
This is a good move by Ottawa trying to sign their new winger now. DeBrincat already is an established goal scorer in the league, and he has the potential to possibly get fifty goals this season. Signing him to a contract now would eliminate other potential suiters as DeBrincat got closer to free agency. There is no telling what other organization would pay him, and a bidding war could start.
Ottawa has an impressive group of young talent, and they had a great off season. They look to be one of the more improved teams this year and DeBrincat is a big reason why. It is no wonder Ottawa is already in introductory contract discussions with their new acquired winger.
