The player involved is claiming it was a complete accident. The video definitely raises some questions.

A game today in Sweden's HockeyTrean, a fifth-tier Swedish league, saw a player hit a referee while the official was not looking. After falling into the boards, the referee had to be taken to hospital, and was told his arm was broken. There was no penalty on the play.

The player involved is Casper Gilberg. Both he and his coach defended the hit, calling it an accidents. In fact, Gilberg told reporters the official was getting in the way the whole game.

"It's the final of the series and everyone is excited out there, especially me, who likes to play physically. The referee gets in the way, as he did the whole game. I had to stop their player and then the referee got in the way. Then he had to take the hit even though it was not the intention, of course."

While Gilberg is right in saying the referee ended up between the two players, it looks like he has some time to at least try to avoid the official, but chooses not to do so. I have no doubt his league will be taking a second look at this one.
