Toronto Maple Leafs create over 4 million dollars in cap space with roster move

Worrying rumours of John Klingberg's health status began circulating quickly after missing just a few games this season, including the team's entire trip to Sweden. Now, the Leafs have officially made a decision.

The team has place Klingberg on the long-term injured reserve, with reports that he could potentially never return to the NHL as he deals with a chronic hip injury.

It's extremely unfortunate for Klingberg, but explains the drop-off in his play since he left the Dallas Stars in 2021-22. In 14 games this season, Klingberg recorded 5 assists and a brutal rating of -7. He's an unrestricted free agent at the end of this year, but makes $4.15M this season.

For the Leafs, this could be a blessing in disguise - Klingberg was barely playable in his condition, and placing him on the LTIR will give the team cap space to make a move for a defenceman, perhaps for one of the two available from the Calgary Flames.
