With the disputed injury claim of Robin Lehner missing significant time with injury, and a struggling backup in Laurent Brossoit, Vegas is currently desperate for good goaltending. Last night against a top league team in Florida, the Golden Knights got their goaltending from rookie Logan Thompson.
Prior to last night, both Brossoit and Thompson had struggled, but with Brossoit posting a sub .900 save percentage over 24 games, Vegas decided to trust Thompson against Florida despite having only 5 prior career games played.
Thompson was able to post 33 saves over 36 shots, good enough to secure the win with a .916 save percentage, and end Vegas' losing streak. Speaking to Hesse Granger of the Athletic after his win, Thompson recognized his personal struggles and the team's as well.
Vegas remains active ahead of the trade deadline, and while this performance is positive in the short term, the team will likely explore options to acquire a goalie if Lehner is missing significant time. Current options include Semyon Varlamov, Anton Forsberg, and Joonas Korpisalo.
