Things got chippy fast last night when the Washington Capitals took on the Tampa Bay Lightning yesterday. With the newest member of the Capitals at the centre of all the drama.
Now according to the NHL's department of Player Safety, Washington forward Nicolas Aube-Kubel is going to have a hearing for his hit to the the head of Lightning defensemen Cal Foote.
The hit happened with 18:04 left in the second period. Foote was cutting across centre ice when Aube-Kubel met him and made direct contact with his head. Foote did not return to the game
These are the kinds of hits that the NHL has long said don't belong in the game and yet, because of the lack of punishments handed out for these types of infractions are the reason they continue. I hope Department of Player Safety actually hands out a significant punishment as that's the only way to get this type of hit out of the game.
However, it is the DoPS, so you never know. My faith in them to do the right thing has never been there and I doubt that will change with this hearing.
