Wayne Gretzky tells Paul Bissonnette that 'stats are for losers'
The NHL on TNT panel is the best coverage in the game, hands down. The crew which usually consists of Paul Bissonnette and Wayne Gretzky tells as in mid-season form last night. The crew was covering goaltending and Bissonnette was discussing the opportunity for the Avalanche in goal when Gretzky finally cut him off.
Stats are for losers. Okay. Okay, Grant Fuhr. If it was 5-5, he wasn't letting that six goal in. It's how the goals and the time you let them in.
You make big key saves. That's way more important than stats. I don't care what anybody says. And yet we look at statistics and all that goes with that but it's the guy who makes the big save when the games on the line and Kuemper prove that it could do that.
It's clear that Gretzky doesn't put the same level of importance on statistics as some others do, but it's pretty clear he's right. At the end of the day all anyone cares about is if you make the save that matters most.
Last season Darcy Kuemper proved exactly that, you don't have to stop them all, just the last one.
