Absolutely tragic news out of the province of Quebec after a young hockey player was killed at a team practice earlier this week. Police in Saint-Eustache confirm the 11-year-old was struck by a puck in the neck and could not be saved.
"Tuesday evening, during hockey practice, an 11-year-old boy was accidentally hit by a puck while participating in a regular exercise. It is with regret that we were informed of the child's death."
Police stressed the player was wearing all required protective equipment, which included a neck guard. A coroner will investigate, as is standard procedure in these cases.
"The police service has notified the Coroner's Office and will assist with the investigation, which is still underway. The purpose of the investigation is to shed light on the causes and circumstances of the death."
The Saint-Eustache Minor Hockey Association has issued a statement saying their thoughts are with the young boy's family, as well as those that were at the practice.
"We understand the impact of this event on those who witnessed it, as well as on parents, volunteers and all those who support our young hockey players."
"The Association encourages those who feel the need to seek assistance to use various support services, including contacting 811 or reaching out to Sport Aide at 1-833-211-2433 for support."
Our thoughts are with the family, friends, and teammates of the young boy at this time.
