Former Sixth Overall Pick Signs Overseas After Rejection from Two Canadian Teams
Filip Zadina showed promise early in his run in the NHL, but after departing for Europe a year ago, he has now signed a new deal to remain in Switzerland.
Back in 2018, the Detroit Red Wings used the No. 6 overall pick on Czech winger Filip Zadina, and early in his career, optimism was high that the team had landed a genuine piece of their future.
After five years and just 68 points in 190 games played, Zadina moved on to the San Jose Sharks, and after one season, he departed North America all together, joining HC Davros in the National League in Switzerland.
Following a solid first season there, Zadina commented on a potential return to the NHL at 25-years of age, noting that if an offer and a genuine role came from a team in North America, he'd take it.
If something like that could come from America, I would take it 100 percent.
Now however, he's turned his back on the National Hockey League, signing a multi-year extension with Davros, keeping him in Switzerland until he will be 28-years of age.
Thankfully for Zadina, that's still plenty of time to prove why he was a first-round pick once more and to get a genuine role with a team in the National Hockey League, but for now, he's enjoying his role with the team and will remain in Switzerland as he looks to find his game once more.
Ultimately, it's unclear if he'll ever make it back to the NHL, as he struggled to live up to the expectations of a former first-round pick, but after one productive year overseas, if he can continue to improve, teams in the NHL will be lining up to land the talented winger.
