On Sunday morning, the IIHF announced their decision following a hearing regarding an incident yesterday involving Canadian defenceman Bowen Byram and Finnish forward Jesse Puljujarvi.
In a post on social media this morning, the International Ice Hockey Federation's Disciplinary Panel announced that Team Canada defenceman Bowen Byram has been suspended one game for slashing Team Finland forward Jesse Puljujarvi during the first period of Saturday's game.
"The 2024 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship Disciplinary Panel has issued a one (1) game suspension to Canada's Byram, Bowen (#4) for violating Official Playing Rule 61 (Slashing) against Finland's Puljujarvi, Jesse (#13)." The IIHF said.
The incident occurred during a battle in front of Canadian goaltender Jordan Binnington. As both players were trying to battle for position, Bowen Byram gets his stick between the legs of Jesse Puljujarvi and motions upwards towards his groin.
Byram was given a five-minute major and a game misconduct by the officials and it was confirmed following a video review. The ejection left Canada with six defenceman for the remainder of the game and they would go on to defeat the Finns by a score of 5-3.
The 22-year-old blueliner will now miss Sunday's game against Switzerland and will be eligible to return for Canada's final game of the preliminary round on Tuesday against the hosts, Czechia.
