Jason Spezza, working under Dan Muse in Pittsburgh, just landed the kind of Team Canada job that can push an assistant GM into a real NHL race.

That's the real story here, even with Brad Treliving sharing top billing in Hockey Canada's announcement on Monday.
Spezza is stepping into a bigger spotlight, and this one carries real weight.
Hockey Canada named Spezza and Treliving to lead the management group for the 2026 IIHF World Championship, which runs from May 15 to May 31 in Zürich and Fribourg, Switzerland.
Kyle Dubas and Scott Salmond will support that group, which matters because Spezza is now attached to a high-profile build on an international stage, not just a back-room NHL title.
That's where this gets interesting for front offices around the league.
Spezza is no longer just a former star learning the business. He keeps getting handed bigger files.
He joined Dubas in Pittsburgh in June 2023, and his rise has been fast since then.
He now holds the assistant general manager role with the Penguins and also runs the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton club.

Jason Spezza lands surprise GM role as he returns to hockey

This is the kind of assignment owners and presidents notice.
Building a Team Canada roster means calls, persuasion, contingency work and pressure that feels a lot closer to a general manager's desk than a ceremonial title does.
Spezza already had buzz as an executive on the rise.
This move adds another layer because it gives him a lead role in a tournament where every choice gets picked apart.
And unlike a quiet front-office promotion, this one is public.
His name is out front with Treliving, on a Hockey Canada file, tied to a national team expected to chase gold.
That matters even more right now because Spezza has already surfaced in chatter around future NHL management openings.
Jobs get filled by résumés, but they also get filled by momentum.
For Spezza, this looks like more than a nice add-on. It looks like another test drive for a much bigger chair.
Treliving brings experience. Dubas brings reach. But Spezza may be the one whose stock changes the most from this tournament.
That's why this appointment hits harder than a standard Hockey Canada note. Jason Spezza is back in the spotlight, and this time it's as a serious management name, not a former player with upside.
