Victor Hedman won't dress for Game 1, and Jon Cooper confirmed Tampa Bay will open the series without its captain.

That's a rough hit for the Lightning before the biggest game on their schedule.
Hedman is still not available, which leaves a massive hole on Tampa Bay's blue line against the Canadiens.
Cooper did leave a little room for hope.
He said Hedman has started skating on his own, which means the veteran defender is at least moving in the right direction physically.
But that didn't change the immediate call.
Take a look:
Tampa Bay still has to get through the opener without its top minute-eater, its captain, and one of the most important players in the room.
There was at least one encouraging sign on Sunday morning.
During the optional skate, Hedman made a brief appearance and handled the puck while taking a few laps on his own.
That kind of sight matters this time of year.
Even a short solo skate can calm some nerves around a team that knows how much Hedman changes the pace of a playoff game when he's right.

Tampa Bay faces early pressure against the Canadiens

Still, there's no way to spin the news as anything but a setback.
Tampa Bay now heads into Game 1 trying to steady its back end without the player who usually sets the tone in all situations.
That affects everything.
Matchups get tougher, the breakout gets cleaner only with more effort, and the bench loses a calming presence when momentum starts to swing.
This is where playoff depth gets tested fast.
For the Canadiens, the opening just got bigger.
Any team seeing Hedman miss the first game of a series understands that the door is open a little wider than expected.
The Lightning can still lean on experience and structure, but the focus won't leave Hedman until he's back in the lineup.
Until then, Tampa Bay is chasing a series lead without one of its biggest pieces.
